Prime Minister Babu Ram Bhattarai has said China has responded positively to the government’s request for assistance to develop a regional international airport in Pokhara.
“The government is committed to taking the project ahead. I assure that the project will be started soon,” said Bhattarai, inaugurating the 13th Pokhara Street Festival here on Wednesday.
The prime minister said the government has given top priority to tourism and agriculture sectors. In order to create employment and ensure economic prosperity, tourism development is essential, he said, requesting local residents to develop the handicraft sector, as the business is directly related to tourism. “This will also help create rural employment.”
According to Bhattarai, the government will soon form a high-level taskforce that will devise incentive packages for the tourism industry.
Expressing his commitment to ensure the safety of general public and industrial investment, the prime minister directed the local administration and security personnel not to bow to any sort of pressure in the course of performing their duties.
On the government’s plan to declare the years 2012 and 2013 as Nepal Investment Year, Bhattarai said the government will make a formal declaration of the programme within a few days.
Expressing concern about rampant encroachment of Fewa Lake, the prime minister urged stakeholders curb such practices. “It is necessary to preserve the lake so as to maintain the tourist hub’s beauty.”
Meanwhile, the lake side has been decorated like a bride for the street festival that began on Wednesday under the theme ‘Eat on street, dance on street and enjoy on street’. Pokhara’s new look has not only enticed foreign tourists, but also locals, said Shree Ram Giri, coordinator of the festival. |
